RagsReborn's Holiday Craft Show Schedule

No need to stress out about gift giving this year... do all your shopping at craft shows!!

We've made it through October and now the holidays are upon us. It's time for my annual plea for everyone to shop local. As artisans, we devote so much time, resources and energy into crafting a unique handmade product that we are proud of. Although it might be quicker or cheaper to buy all your gifts on Amazon or at Wal-Mart, I really want to encourage you to support local small businesses. I have five spectacular Christmas-themed craft shows for you to check out. And if you want a custom order, please contact me at ragsreborngifts@gmail.com and @RagsRebornGifts through all forms of social media.

I've participated in all of these shows before and I can say that they are all great! If you're looking for handmade products, I'd suggest The Handmade Show and Sleigh Bells Market, as those two exclusively allow artisans. If you like a mix of everything (and I mean everything), The Santa Market is for you. The Merry Market and Christmas Bazaar are smaller shows but also have good variety in terms of handmade crafts and direct sales products. Most of these shows serve breakfast & lunch and have activities for children so they're a perfect way to have some family fun as well as getting your Christmas shopping done. I hope to see you soon! 🎄🎅🤶

RagsReborn's summer craft show schedule.

I was originally planning on writing about Part 2 of Wes & mine's New Orleans trip tonight but then I realized that I have a craft show coming up. I actually have SEVERAL craft shows coming up so I need to do a craft show schedule post!  You peoples gotta know where I'll be at, right? Of course you do! So here it is, RagsReborn's summer craft show schedule-

Newcastle Friends of the Library Book Sale, Craft Show and Blood Drive
Saturday June 2nd, 2018
9am - 4pm
Newcastle Public Library
705 NW 10th Street, Newcastle, OK 73065
https://www.facebook.com/events/999344373573001/

This will be my first appearance at this show. I don't know much about the event but I do know that I love books and I love libraries so I'm pumped to be a vendor supporting this cause. The first one hundred shoppers will receive a free swag bag with goodies from many of the vendors. And the books from the library are being sold by the bag-load. You can fill an entire bag full of books for only $5! I have a feeling I'll be checking out the book sale more than being present at my booth. LOL Does anyone else have this issue when they're vending at shows? Where you're too busy looking and shopping at other vendors' booths so you're constantly away from your own booth? I'm hoping its not just me. Haha!

Wanderlust Pop-Up Shops Spring/Summer 2018
Sunday June 10th, 2018
10am - 6pm
Wheeler Ferris Wheel
1701 S. Western Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73109
https://www.facebook.com/events/2040947109520102/

Wanderlust is back, y'all!!! Yippee! Crazy winter weather prevented the show from happening in April but now it's June and the weather is nice and sunny! This event has been moved to a Sunday (its traditionally been held on Saturdays). I am so excited to participate as a vendor with Revolve Productions again. Tobi puts on the best shows. There will be a wide variety of local makers and artists, including my friends, Paul (Pens & Things) & Melida (Mama Dragon Studios), who make fancy ink pens and steampunk jewelry, and my friend Elizabeth (Zee & Zeus Dog Treats), who makes gluten free & organic dog treats. My booth should be sandwiched between theirs. There will also be food trucks, events for children, pet friendly, and the list goes on. If you only go to one of RagsReborn's show, I highly suggest this one.

Made in Oklahoma Fest
Saturday June 16th, 2018
10am - 6pm
Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at the Reed Conference Center
5750 Will Rogers Road, Midwest City, OK 73110
https://www.facebook.com/events/1630004580403449/

This is my first time participating in this event and I hear it's a good one. I believe this will be the seventh year for this event and it keeps growing each year. There will be both indoor and outdoor vendors so expect a good variety of products. Aside from merchandise vendors, there will be local wineries, craft beers, and food vendors (which is probably what I'm most excited about!) This will be my last show of the summer season. I'm not sure how it happened but I scheduled my entire summer craft show schedule in one month! June is going to be a busy one! After these three shows, I'll be taking a break until September. I hope to see you soon!

RagsReborn's Spring Craft Show Review

~*~*Awesome pillows galore! ~*~*

This past spring, I decided to take it easy and only do five shows. I was originally scheduled to do seven but one show had to reschedule for a different date--and I wasn't available--and another one cancelled all together. While I would love to be selling at shows on a regular basis, I am glad I did not overbook myself. (Less stress is always a good thing, right?) I had more time to focus on new designs & patterns and try out different ideas creatively, which I believe turned out to be a better investment than participating in back-to-back shows. Per tradition, here is my recap of the previous handful of shows I participated in.

Each of the shows I participated in was a good one and I really don't have much of a critique. \(^_^)/ The event organizers at each venue did an amazing job with advertising and vendor hospitality. Unloading and booth set up was a smooth process at each event, the organizers and volunteers were friendly & helpful and a steady stream of shoppers was present all day. If invited back, I would definitely repeat each show next year.

My first outdoor show was a success! Wanderlust Pop-up shops was one of the most fun shows I ever participated in. The turnout was amazing... I think around 5,000 people came out to support the local artists and crafters. I had the pleasure of borrowing a tent and being neighbors with some friends; the day went swimmingly. Not even the crazy gusts of wind brought our spirits down! The other show that I really enjoyed was DUCK Week. It was my first time sharing a booth and that was also a success. It was nice to have company throughout the day and to also have someone keep an eye on my belongings when I had to step away. Now that I've passed those tests, I will be signing up for more outdoor shows and sharing booths with Rachelle.
My shared booth with Moon Drake Soaps.

Unfortunately, the shows with the lowest grossing sales were at the Newcastle Fair Barn, Western Oaks Christian Church and the Quarter Mania Auction. I attribute the poor sales directly to scheduling (Quarter Mania occurred on Good Friday so turn out was very minimal) and weather...ugh, that blasted Oklahoma weather! *shakes fist at sky* The show coordinators did the best they could, but the weather was really out of their control. Despite that, my sales weren't horrible.. just not where I would have liked them to be. The show in Newcastle occurred on the coldest weekend in March and the show in Western Oaks occurred on the coldest weekend in April. I learned a fun trick from one of the volunteers in Newcastle. He said that whenever his son had a baseball game and they wanted to influence the weather, he would draw a turtle on the baseball field if they wanted rain and draw a cactus if they wanted sunshine. He drew a large cactus right outside my booth and the sun actually started to peak out!

Speaking of sunshine, my summer show line up is getting finalized this week. I won't be doing too many shows this summer so my pillows will be "limited release" LOL I'll post the schedule on next week's blog post. You won't want to miss these shows!

RagsReborn's Spring Craft Show Schedule, pt.2 (April)

Here it is, guys, the April craft show line up everyone has been waiting for!! I am beyond excited that RagsReborn will be participating in each of these craft shows. I promise you that each and every one of these shows will be a good one. Guaranteed. (Three out of four of these are repeat shows that I have done before so I'm allowed to say stuff like promise and guarantee. LOL)
Since my spring craft show season turned out so poorly in 2016, I decided to act a little smarter for spring 2017. Instead of signing up for any show I could find, I decided that I would only sell at repeat shows that had good traffic & sales previously and/or shows that came recommended by fellow vendors. Its the creme de la creme this year!

Friday April 14th, 2017 - Quarter Mania
5:30pm - 8:30pm (auction starts at 6:30pm)
Mustang Town Center, Grand Ballroom 1201 N. Mustang Rd., Mustang, OK 73064
https://www.facebook.com/events/436857180039275/
I am starting off with my absolute favorite charity event. If you haven't attended a Quarter Mania event, I highly encourage it. It is so much fun! All you do is buy a paddle and then pay quarters to bid on the auction items. The vendors always go all out and donate some amazing stuff! All the vendors there are super friendly and the entire night is filled with energy & excitement. All of the money from paddles and vendor booth rent is going to be donated to Friends of the Mustang Animal Shelter and Mustang Parks & Recreation. That's right... one event aiding two charities. Doesn't get any better than that!

Saturday April 15th, 2017- Wanderlust Pop Up Shops
10am - 6pm
Wheeler Ferris Wheel 1701 S. Western Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73019
https://www.facebook.com/events/1714056515572283/
Wanderlust is my big (MAJOR!) show for the year. If you can only make it out to one show on my agenda, I would definitely choose this one. It is going to be a very large event with a huge variety of talented vendors. It'll be outdoors at the newly installed Oklahoma Ferris wheel. Yes, you read that correctly... outdoors... as in my first outdoor festival! Huge shout out to my friends Paul Bowman (Pens and Things by Paul) and Melida Bowman (Mama Dragon Studio) for letting me borrow a tent. Without them, I would not be participating in this show.
This is a first time show (because the Ferris wheel wasn't here before) but it is being put on by a company that runs many other large and successful reoccurring craft shows. I am oh so very excited about being a part of this show. And, I have a surprise announcement... at this show only, I will be selling tote & messenger bags! I've been working diligently on these and spoiler alert...they are flippin' adorable!

Saturday April 22nd, 2017- 8th Annual Spring Craft Show
9am - 3pm
Western Oaks Christian Church 8100 NW 23rd., Oklahoma City, OK 73127

Saturday April 29th, 2017- The Handmade Show
9am - 4pm
The Crown Center 13300 S. Western Ave., Moore, OK 73170

I participated in the shows at Western Oaks Christian Church and The Crown Center last year. This will actually be my fourth time at The Handmade Show! The vendors and event organizers are like one big family. Although they are smaller shows, they are certainly worth visiting; if not for the vendors, then for the amazing lunch cooked by the church ladies and friendly atmosphere of the show. I will be in my same booth space as previous years, so when you come visit, you'll know where to find me! One last thing to mention, out of all the shows that I have participated in, these are two of my three favorite church shows to do. (The third one is only a Fall show, which makes me sad. Jan, if you're reading this, Triumph Family Worship needs a spring show, too!)

So there you have it. The next couple of weeks will be very busy for RagsReborn and I hope to see everyone out and about supporting not only myself, but all the other amazing local talent that is the Oklahoma crafters and small business scene.

RagsReborn's 2016 overall craft show year

Let's start with my BEST show of the year... Christmas at the Lodge!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Are we all ready for 2017? I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year's Eve. I did a little celebrating but I mostly did a lot of math. Exhilarating, I know. LOL My last craft show of the year was a few weeks ago but I've been putting off crunching the numbers for 2016. Mainly for two reasons; I hate math (accounting has got to be my least favorite part of being a small business owner) and I was about 95% sure this year sucked.

Set up at St. Ann's retirement home for the home bound residents to do their Christmas shopping.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Although I had a handful of shows that were absolutely terrible (aka I didn't sell a single thing), my year overall wasn't as bad as I thought it would turn out to be. I'm still not where I want to be-- so I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon-- but RagsReborn is trucking along quite steadily. And that makes it all worthwhile for me!

Set up at the main library at OU Health Science Center campus with my friend and fellow vendor, Nancy. Her granddaughter calls me "the pillow lady" and we share snacks.

This past year was the first time that I did a full calendar year of craft shows. In 2016, I participated in 29 craft shows (a significant jump from the 6 shows I participated in throughout 2015). That averages out to almost one show every other weekend. Whoa. Also, I connected with 10 people throughout the year to make custom orders. Needless to say, I am 100% completely immersed in RagsReborn and my little passion project is no longer just a hobby. I would say that I work as much at crafting as I do at my full-time paying job. And I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It took a while but, at age 32, I have finally found my calling in life.

Happy selfie with my two favorite children.

So what's my takeaway from the year?  Let's see... this was sort of hard for me but I came up with two things...
NUMERO UNO- When I first started out the year, I was NOT prepared for the slow Spring & Summer craft show seasons. When things didn't turn out the way I wanted, I blamed the universe. (This is something that I've struggled with my entire life.) It took me a few shows to get over playing the victim. I thought I was putting in 100% effort but I wasn't. My hard work amounted to about 75% but for the other 25%, I was looking for other avenues to blame. I was being lazy and pessimistic.
Right before the Fall craft show season, I decided that I was going to change my attitude. My husband is always telling me to be optimistic and think positive; after a while, I decided to take his advice.
  • I started smiling through each one of my shows, regardless of how awful the show was moving along.
  • Instead of focusing on why I wasn't selling at certain shows, I started taking notes on what works. I started noticing what people were buying and which venues had the best crowd turn out. I basically moved away from zoning in on negativity to zoning in on positives.
  • I started talking to other vendors and noting traits that I admired in them and then applying those traits to my own business approach.
  • I started listening to podcasts about small businesses and reading blogs written by successful businessmen & women.
  • I started branching out and sewing more than just t-shirt pillows. I experimented with different types of fabric and techniques.
  • I started marketing more aggressively and moved out of my comfort zone. I was conquering fears one show at a time and it worked!

Two of my new found friends: children's book author, Carly Cartmill & Sweet Sparrows owner, Jenifer Walker.

NUMERO DOS- I found my tribe (squad, sisterhood, whatever you want to call it). This is HUGE for me. I don't have a lot of friends and I never prescribed to a clique. By doing craft shows, I started seeing some of the same vendors over and over again and I discovered where I fit in. I was able to distinguish which ones were genuinely friendly and which ones were the "mean girls". I attentively listened to all the advice I could get. Then I had to separate which was good advice and which wasn't the best for me.  I gravitated toward strong & successful business owners and solidified friendships.
I no longer feel so much like the young rookie in the craft show world. I am still naive and not as experienced as I could be but I have reached a point where I can be picky. I no longer believe everything I hear (because a lot of what people will tell you is BS. Hahaha!) Next year, I will not be participating in every show that I come across. I can do more research and find the shows worth doing and turn down the ones that aren't a good fit. I finally figured out what "a good fit" is for my product. That is another huge accomplishment. I feel like, going forward, when I am struggling, I know who I can text or which vendors' group I can turn to for advice online.
  • There are a handful of peers that I will listen to and apply any & all advice to my business model.
  • There are certain vendors that I will participate in the same shows they're doing and request for my booth to be next to theirs because I know their company will be welcomed throughout the day.
  • There are a few show organizers that I will sign up for whatever show they put on because I know it will be a good experience.
And that ends 2016. I struggled, I learned and I overcame. RagsReborn is here to stay!! I have some big plans for 2017 and I already have a few spring craft shows in mind. More on that to come next week...

Erica survived her first craft show!

Friday and Saturday were two extremely exhausting days but I made it! My first Indie Trunk Show is done and in the books. I didn't do as well as I hoped but it was still a very good experience. My main goal was to sell enough to recuperate the booth/vendor fee charged by the show. Unfortunately, I came up a few dollars shy. (Ok, more than a few dollars but I'm trying to stay positive.) After talking to other vendors, the consensus was that there were tons of lookers but not very many buyers. Many other vendors also complained about low sales but praised the high amount of exposure. I need to get my name out there so high exposure is good for me. I talked to many customers & vendors and passed out several business cards.  In theory, those connections will lead to future sales so I guess I can't really beat myself up too much over poor sales at the show.
My booth display

I took notes during the day and came up with my top five tips for first time vendors (or any vendors, really, if you are interested in craft show advice).

1. Do your research BEFORE the show.
This is the one that really got me into trouble. I was so excited (and naive) to get into the Indie Trunk Show that I did absolutely zero research about the size and scope of the event. Its a big, big, big show. My booth was nowhere near as good as my neighbors' & my presence there wasn't very "professional." Its hard to explain but you could tell that this was my first show. Live and learn, right?
Also, its an expensive show (I later learned that most smaller shows charge vendors only half of what Indie Trunk Show booth/application fees are) so a majority of the vendors there are experienced with large budgets. One of my neighbors does craft shows full time. She has an established customer base and people come to shows just to buy a onesie from her. Can you imagine driving 25 miles out of your way just to buy baby clothes? Sounds crazy but this woman had customers all day; she knew the ropes and this was definitely not her first rodeo...on the other hand, I was a complete rookie and you could tell.
During the week before the show, I learned that you don't just start out at a huge show. You start small at local fundraisers or community craft shows. You slowly build your customer base and then go do something like Indie Trunk Show. It was too late to back out by the time I gained this knowledge so I just decided that I would chalk it up to being ambitious. Looking back at it now, I wish that I had some experience before jumping into one of the largest shows in the metro. I spoke with another one of my neighbors and she mentioned a small show at the Earlywine YMCA. Its basically a small fundraiser benefiting the Greater YMCA. I've already applied for it. The size of that show and quality/quantity of vendors who will be there fits my experience a lot better.

2. Make friends with other vendors.
Networking is key!
Other vendors, especially your neighbors are not necessarily competition. They are actually your best source of advice. I was lucky enough to be right next to Lil Nana's Creations (the onesie lady) and across from Wood Warriors. Both are extremely successful and experienced crafters. Both were more than willing to answer my questions, calm my stressed out self and offer tips and tricks of the trade. Lil Nana's Creations told me about a discount shop where I can buy display furniture and Wood Warriors went as far as to conceptualized a booth layout for me! Wood Warriors also told me about several upcoming shows (that are a lot smaller and cheaper than Indie Trunk Show).
Gather business cards. Talk to any vendor who is willing to chat. Several vendors came up to my booth to exchange cards and "talk shop." I would name them all but I met so many that I can't even remember them all. It was great! Friendly faces make the day go by a lot faster. I actually made two pretty good friends who were nowhere even near my booth: CulbertsCreations Jewelry and Cyndi-Lou Fashions. They walked by several times throughout the day just to check on me because they knew it was my first show. One of my coworkers at Delta Dental, Glass Soldier Gifts, was there which made it tons better after finding out I had a friend I knew outside of the crafting world.
Check out other vendors' displays. Get ideas for your own booth and sales pitch. If a booth is loaded with customers, go in and observe. What are they selling? How is their booth set up? What are they saying to customers? I did a quick walk through before, during and after the show and got quite a few booth layout ideas.

3. Bring a friend.
I'm an independent woman but I also have basic human needs like going to the bathroom! LOL

You absolutely will need someone to help set up and tear down before and after the show. One of my neighbors, Zahara Clothing, had it down to an art. She and her boyfriend got her entire booth (structures and items) up in less than half an hour. It was entirely because they had a buddy system going. If she was there by herself, there is no way she could have managed. You can run your booth the day of the show by yourself but I would not recommend it.
Because of scheduling conflicts, Wes was only able to help me set up before the show and stay a while the morning of the show. He left right as the show started and was out for 3-4 hours. I was doing okay on my own until I had to pee. Then there's the other biological function of needing to eat. My mom and Mike were scheduled to bring me lunch at 1pm. I ended up getting hungry before then. I preferred to not eat in my booth so I spent a few hours starving myself and almost pissing my pants. Plus, you just need a break. Its good to leave your booth and walk about for a little bit. Get some fresh air and take it all in.  I didn't get to shop or meet as many vendors as I would have liked to because I was the only one manning my booth in the morning.
Luckily, Wes, my mom and Mike all showed up around the same time to rescue me and Wes stayed the rest of the day so the afternoon went a lot better. We took turns walking around and scoping out other vendors. We also had regular potty breaks. LOL

4. The show "rules" are really just guidelines.
Being a newbie, I followed all the rules. (I'm also a square in real life so following the rules is just what I do.) The most basic rule of "handmade, vintage and repurposed" was not followed. I saw tons of vendors who were just reselling items. A lot of the clothing vendors were selling clothes that I could swear I saw at Forever 21 and Fossil. I saw one booth that was selling some baby contraption that was still in its original packaging.
Other rules such as stay within your chalked booth perimeters, set up and tear down times, and parking were also not followed. Some vendors started packing up as early as 4:15pm when the show ended at 5pm. Parking and unloading was a NIGHTMARE. There was a rule to park up front as you unload and then move your car when you're done. No one followed that rule. Also no one parked within actual parking spaces. Everyone was doubled parked or parked in the fire lane. One woman walked around shouting, "Whoever is in the HHR needs to move their car because I almost hit you!"
I'm not saying to be a complete rebel but the packet of rules they give you before the show should not be something of concern. Follow them as best you can but don't worry if you can't abide by them all. Also, don't be angry when you see other people openly breaking the rules.

5.Look busy in your booth.
I know that not everyone can do this. But, if your craft is something that can be transported, bring it to the show.  You make ceramics? Bring your wheel and clay. Trust me on this one. If you don't follow any other tips in this blog, be sure to at least give this one some consideration.
I brought my sewing machine in anticipation of custom orders. I also brought three shirts that I didn't finish before the show. I had a lot of traffic come through my booth. Tons of people stopped to look and take a card. I would smile & say good morning and they would smile back. Most either just looked at my booth without really coming in and those who did come in, only took a brief look around. I'm not an intimidating person! But me just sitting there prevented a lot of people from feeling comfortable really looking at and handling my items.
Once I started sewing my left over shirts, that completely changed. People came in to ask what I was doing, people came in and asked if it was okay to browse while I worked, people noticed that I wasn't watching them so they rummaged through my bins of pillows and picked them up. I actually got a few sales. I would say that the only times I got sales was when I was sewing and paying my customers no mind.
The best part was that Wood Warriors' child came over. Cute little kid of 7 years.  He wanted to "help" me. I let him hang out and because of him, I attracted a teenager (who had money) and another little boy (who asked his mom for money). Then another one of the vendor's children, little pre-teen girl, came in and started telling me what's hip and what would sell. She said her friend loves Snoopy and if her mom gave her money, she would come back and buy my Snoopy Knowledge is Power pillow. She never came back but now I know what will sell in the younger market. I can't have kids so I'm not in tune with that niche. Kids don't have money but their parents do and about half my shoppers were kids who asked their parents for money to buy a pillow.

So there you have it. I learned a lot during my first show experience but I condensed it to my top five just for you. I'm still selling. My items are on Facebook (www.facebook.com/RagsRebornGifts) and will slowly be posted on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/RagsRebornGifts). I'm always available for custom orders--those are my favorite, actually. If all goes well, I will be at the Earlywine YMCA Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday November 14th, 2015 and possibly again at the Indie Trunk Show (but sharing a booth with Jessa & Mason Summer is Glory) on Saturday December 16th, 2015. Don't quote me on the December Indie Trunk Show, though. And next spring at the Country Glam Pop Up Shops On Monroe in Crescent, Oklahoma in April 2016.

Aftermath of the show. I have a lot of cleaning, organizing, Etsy posting to do.

Erica is going to be in the Indie Trunk Show!!!

The 2015 spring Indie Trunk Show is this Saturday!! I'm going to be there...I'm going to be both a confident artist and a bundle of nerves. It'll take a lot to successfully pull that off so send me well wishes and better yet, come by and say hello.  \(^_^)/ I will be in booth #148 (booth numbers won't be posted so just look for my RagsRebornGifts signs). I'll be in my official shirt, too! I bought an Indie Trunk Show promotional tee and got my company name screen printed on the back. Snazzy!

I feel like I have a week to finish up a thousand and one things. As of now, I am one frazzled mess O_O  I have to keep passing out fliers and amp up my presence on social media. I plan to post an album on my Facebook business page with all my inventory. Luckily, I'm done with all my sewing. (big sigh of relief here!) I have about 80 pillows and 20 totes. I haven't done a full inventory count but my goal was 100 items and I know I've done at least that. Really, all I need to do is calm my nerves and think positively. Easier said than done. *rolls eyes*
This is my first show...period.  I opened my Etsy store and started this crazy adventure last November (yeah, only seven measly months ago). I'm not quite sure what I got myself into, honestly. My business hasn't even been operational a year, yet I'm going to be in one of the biggest shows in the metro. Was this a mistake? No, no, no. I can't think like that. Even if I fail terribly, it would have been a really good learning experience. On the flip-side, being in a show of this magnitude could be my gateway into a lot more successful ventures in the future.

The Indie Trunk Show has a Facebook page specifically for vendors. It's been a wonderful resource and networking tool. After reading posts and commenting on a few myself, I learned that you really need to start at small local fundraisers or church craft shows. You're not supposed to just jump into a huge show that has over 200 vendors and an expected turn out of a couple thousand shoppers. Ooops. I guess its go big or go home, right? To try to get a handle on things, I have been reading up on blogs and forums about craft shows (here's a really good one: https://blog.etsy.com/en/2008/seller-how-to-craft-fair-tips/).

Here's a fun promotional picture I made. I needed something for a transitional point in this blog post.

Anyway, since its Monday craft night, I suppose I should share a craft.
Each vendor at the show gets a 10x10 foot block (literally a square on the floor that's taped off) of space for a booth. I have no walls. I have no display structures. But I do have crazy ideas. LOL This weekend, Wes & I built the main structure for my booth. We built it out of cardboard, cloth, craft glue and Velcro. (I know, I know, insert doubt here)
I wanted my pillows on a bed or couch (something that you would normally find pillows on). And I wanted my booth to look comfortable and homey. Remember in The Lego Movie when they had a double decker couch? Well, that's what I settled on making. I'll have other small display structures in my booth but that is what I wanted to be my main fixture. I lacked experience in furniture building but I had my vivid imagination and supportive husband. So off we went...
It was a behemoth task. I had a small breakdown in the middle of making it but I kept the tears to a minimal. Wes was wonderful to work with (man, check out that alliteration!) I ended up spending a lot more money on this than I wanted but I am happy with how it turned out. It's still not as stable as I'd like but I think it'll do the job.
I knew Indie Trunk Show would be really hard work going into it but I never imagined the magnitude of time and effort -emotionally and physically- it would take. Now I know for sure that it takes blood, sweat and tears to get something like this done. For anyone who goes to a craft fair or arts festival and remarks, "Oh, is that considered art?... I can do something like that at home and not pay $20 for it here," I dare you to apply for a show then do all the work and try saying something like that again. Trust me, you won't. Items are priced at a premium for a reason. Shows.are.hard.work! I don't want to sound like I'm complaining (it's really just the nerves talking here and causing all my negative thoughts). I really am glad I'm in a show like this because its really making me reevaluate how much I really want Rags|Reborn. to work out.  And I do. This is a goal I must accomplish. I don't want a day job anymore... I love you Delta Dental, but I have bigger things in mind! I want to be an artist. I want to do shows and make custom pillows and I want my Etsy store to be a real source of income. I can't slack off anymore. Is this a challenge? ...Yes of course but it's one I can steer the course of.  The universe loves to throw shit at you. I've had my fair share of ups and downs but I feel like this is something I can control. I can apply for more craft shows, I can network and I can sew. If I'm going to make my dream a reality, I gotta be serious about it and conquering Indie Craft Show is the first step. Its been quite the journey.  I keep going back and forth between excitement and pessimistic thoughts of crashing and burning. It's driving me crazy!!  Arrgh, can't it just be May 16th already?!?

Erica has awesome amazing news!!

Guess who's in the Indie Trunk Show?  This crafty little blogger right here! Come visit me on Saturday, May 16th. If you forget to save the date, no worries... I plan to promote and advertise in the upcoming months...you'll get a flier ;)

Last December, my friend, Michelle, and I went to the Indie Trunk Show at the State Fair Grounds www.indietrunkshowokc.com It was pretty cool. A ton of local artists and vendors were there. So much unique stuff. I was walking around and thinking,

This is 100 percent without a doubt DEFINITELY what I want to do... I want to have a booth filled with my RagsRebornGifts (pillows and totes). And me in the middle of it all...handing out business cards like a pro and accepting custom orders on the spot. OMG... CUSTOM ORDERS!! Those are my absolute favorite to sew. Just imagine it-- lovely people bringing me used t-shirts and me sewing away; turning them into pillows. Then crowds of those same people happily skipping away with their new reborn t-shirt! (Its cheesy but my musings usually are) The only thing that would be missing is Sadie under my work space.

So here's how it happened... I was checking my Etsy dashboard and all of the sudden, I get this conversation:
I immediately got super excited but then thought it was just another marketing ploy. This lady probably contacted tons of Etsy sellers to get the volume of responses she wants. This lady is a professional in marketing...she knows what she's doing. I decided that I wasn't ready, yet, and my business isn't even a year old. I'll accumulate more inventory and then be in the show for 2016.

Then, a few weeks later, I get this message:
"Wow, she does like my stuff'" I thought.  Like, she likes it more than just as if it was a marketing ploy. I did some research and decided that I can handle this. Sure, I need to definitely make more pillows and totes (I only have about 15 made now). And, I need to advertise. If I want to focus on custom orders sewn on-the-spot, I gotta get my name out there. But, hey, its only February and the show is in May. I can do this...right? I'm an over-thinker and an over-stresser, so I made a little plan out in my head, weighed the pros and cons and then applied. And waited.

Then, I got this email!!
I'm accepted!! I've never been accepted into anything my entire life. LOL I feel like the cool kid who tried out for the cheer leading team and got head cheerleader. Its kinda a big deal. So, it's off to work for me. This is where you, loyal readers and fans, come in... I need inventory! If you have a used t-shirt that you don't mind parting with, let me know. I'm taking donations. You can get a pretty good idea of what I use by looking at my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/RagsRebornGifts I also plan to hit up thrift shops around Oklahoma City. If you know some good ones or want to go thrifting with me, then let me know. I love adventures and would love to have you with me!
So many pillows to make!!

I sew. I craft. I have big ideas. Great things are coming.
