RagsReborn Gifts - Fall/Holiday Craft Show Schedule

Hello, all! πŸ‘‹ I will be participating in a few craft shows this season. Yay! πŸ™Œ Normally, I would encourage everyone to come out and say hello ... but I would rather everyone engage as their comfort level allows.

If you want to shop in person, I'll be at four awesome local craft shows.

If you would rather shop online, I am leaving my Etsy shop open during craft show season. My plan is to delete products as they are sold at shows and add new products as I sew them. Please be patient.

If you want to shop in person, but not with crowds, I plan to post product pictures on my social media pages and offer curbside pickup from my place of employment. I'm also debating on doing a Facebook Live type shopping event. Right now I'm leaning toward no, but I will let you know if I change my mind.

Anyway, here are the shows:

Piedmont Founders Day Saturday, September 11, 2021, 9am - 4pm First Baptist Church 15 Jackson Ave NW, Piedmont, OK 73078
This is a super fun family event. There will be a good variety of vendors but I think the main event is the activities for kids. This event is held in conjunction with Junklahoma outdoors.

Prairie Moon Market Saturday, October 2, 2021, 9am - 3pm Prairie Moon Primitives 13256 Lake Road Ave, Wayne, OK 73095
Wayne is only about an hour away from Oklahoma City and well worth the drive. Prairie Moon Primitives is a family-owned wool & embroidery shop. They have the cutest patterns, beautiful hand-dyed wool and also a small quilt shop. There will only be a small handful of vendors at this event but EVERYTHING is handmade... like really legitimately handmade. 😍 No boutiques, no basic candles or jewelry, no boring clothing.

The Santa Market Friday & Saturday, November 19 - 20, 2021, 9am - 4pm State Fair Park's Pavilion and Centennial Buildings 3212 Wichita Walk, Oklahoma City, OK 73107
The Santa Market continues to be the most prestigious show that I participate in. If you want a large variety of vendors including handmade crafts, boutiques and direct sales products, I would highly suggest attending this show. There will be pandemic precautions and social distancing regulations.

Jingle Jam Market Saturday, December 4, 2021, 9am - 3pm Piedmont Intermediate School 977 Washington Ave, Piedmont, OK 73078 This will be my first time participating in this show so I don't have any input. I have spoken with other vendors and they speak highly of it. This event will host handmade crafters, boutiques and direct sales.

As of today, the craft shows listed in the flyer above are all still happening. If any postponements or cancellations come up, I will post updates on my social media pages (Facebook and Instagram). Custom orders are always welcome, too, just email me at ragsreborngifts@gmail.com. Thanks a bunch!

RagsReborn's Holiday Craft Show Schedule

No need to stress out about gift giving this year... do all your shopping at craft shows!!

We've made it through October and now the holidays are upon us. It's time for my annual plea for everyone to shop local. As artisans, we devote so much time, resources and energy into crafting a unique handmade product that we are proud of. Although it might be quicker or cheaper to buy all your gifts on Amazon or at Wal-Mart, I really want to encourage you to support local small businesses. I have five spectacular Christmas-themed craft shows for you to check out. And if you want a custom order, please contact me at ragsreborngifts@gmail.com and @RagsRebornGifts through all forms of social media.

I've participated in all of these shows before and I can say that they are all great! If you're looking for handmade products, I'd suggest The Handmade Show and Sleigh Bells Market, as those two exclusively allow artisans. If you like a mix of everything (and I mean everything), The Santa Market is for you. The Merry Market and Christmas Bazaar are smaller shows but also have good variety in terms of handmade crafts and direct sales products. Most of these shows serve breakfast & lunch and have activities for children so they're a perfect way to have some family fun as well as getting your Christmas shopping done. I hope to see you soon! πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸ€Ά

rags|reborn introduces the Fall Craft Show line up!

Boy am I ready for Fall Craft Show Season!! (I'm also ready for fall weather.) I hear this is when shows pick up for vendors. Thank gawd!! I didn't participate in September or October shows last year but I'm sure anything will be better than June, July & August shows. Summer shows were absolutely terrible, like really really bad. (;_;) Worse than Spring Craft Show Season, and that was pretty rough. The only good show I had over the summer was Quarter Mania the last Friday night in August. That event always rocks!

My advice for other vendors: Spring/Summer craft show season is a big risk. Do your research before applying for shows and be super careful of dates. I learned that most people aren't wanting to spend money because they just blew it all on summer vacation or back-to-school shopping. Don't expect to make a lot of sales but it is a good time to get some experience and hand out business cards.

Besides Quarter Mania, the only spring/summer shows I did well at (and plan to return to next year) are The Spring Handmade Show at The Crown Center, Western Oaks Christian Church's annual Spring Craft Show and (if they make it reoccurring) the craft show at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church. That was a first year show and it was tiny but really well put on & well received.

There are two shows that are on my "maybe" list.
The first one is A Bazaar for all Seasons at Del City Christian Church. It was so well organized. Just look at that sexy vendor packet I got! LOL The volunteers were also very appreciative of the vendors. There was a group of church ladies walking around all day with the sole purpose of handing out free snacks. I didn't make any money but I didn't have to spend any on food, either, so that was really nice. One volunteer from the youth group, Matthew, helped me unload and load my car with a smile on his face. He also walked around with water to keep the vendors hydrated all day.
The main problem I had with this show (besides the fact that my sales completely sucked) was that there was very little advertising. The craft bazaar was held in three buildings. The main building got all of the advertising and traffic. The other two buildings only got about one third of the traffic as the main building. The building that I was in also held the silent auction (its main attraction). The silent auction was all the way in the back room (fellowship hall). The vendors were placed in the various class rooms that lead to the fellowship hall. All the signs pointed straight to the silent auction... nothing directed shoppers to come into the class rooms. I saw people walk right by the room I was in...tunnel vision straight to the auction to place their bids and then straight back out without stopping. At one point, I stood outside the classroom and harassed shoppers to come into our room.

The other show that I might or might not return to is the Norman DeMolay show at the Masonic Lodge. This show had great advertising (the show coordinators were taking pictures and posting on social media all day long), volunteers (the teens in the DeMolay Masons Club-or whatever its called-are top notch. A crowd of them ran to my car to help me unload as soon as I pulled up. And they all eagerly offered to help me pack up after the show. I barely lifted a finger!) and reception (busy flow of traffic all day). Everyone stopped by and looked at my booth. They all had nice things to say. What they didn't have was money. No one had a single penny to spend. It wasn't just me, a couple of the other vendors near me also had dismal sales. But this show is held three times a year... August, October and December. So, I might participate in the October or December one next year.

Anyway, I'm trying to put January thru May behind me and focus all of my positive energy on the rest of the year. Like I mentioned earlier, I haven't participated in fall shows before and I haven't heard of any of the shows that I've signed up for in the vendor community, but I'm feeling good because these are established shows. (And I'm sure I'll see my vendor friends there!) The only show that is relatively new is the one at the Cole Community Center. I believe that the shows at the other three churches have been around a while. Which is great for me... they'll already have an established customer base and marketing strategy. I've already started an autumn line up of pillows. I'll have fall colors & themes and a lot of OU & OSU college football pillows. I'm excited!

One last thing... and it's not on my Fall Show Schedule flyer... I'm going to be in a car show (https://www.facebook.com/events/677548479078250/) this weekend! I think I'm the only vendor there because the main focus is on the classic cars. It'll be held at my friend, Laura's, salon (https://www.facebook.com/doowopglamshop/). Laura has been doing my hair since she was in beauty school and her salon is great. I am so proud of her for following her dream and am grateful that she let me bring some of my pillows to show. I've never been to a car show so this should be a fun experience. It's a retro themed car show so all of the ladies at the salon will be dressed up pin-up style and there's going to be a barbershop quarter there to provide entertainment. It's an outdoor event (another first for me) but the weather should be cooling down. Yay! It promises to be a fun filled day so I hope to see everyone there!

Spring craft show season is OVER...

I didn't advertise my May/June shows as much as my other spring ones...so here's a recap of my flyer.

...and honestly, I'm over spring craft show season. LOL Spring craft shows are so much more stressful than holiday shows!

It's bittersweet but now at least I can breathe and relax a bit! On the one hand, I love being at shows and sewing new projects but on the other hand, three shows per month is quite the ride. Also, spring shows are a bummer! >.> I got so used to good sales last holiday craft show season (when selling only 10 pillows was considered a bad show) that I didn't have realistic expectations for this year. For spring show season, being able to sell 10 pillows was considered a miracle!! I'd be lucky to even sell 5 at a show. I was thoroughly disappointed in RagsReborn over these past eleven shows. I'm taking a break for the summer but I'll be back for the fall/holiday craft show season.

Here's a quick run down of all the shows I participated in--
<<This will be a long blog post because I did 11 shows but I hope it will help shed some light on spring shows for other vendors. If you are a vendor, please leave me your advice and comments. What did I do wrong? What could I have done to have a better season? Anything you want me to know about spring shows in general?>>

Quarter Mania
This was a wonderful event to start off the year! It was actually one of my best shows. I made good contacts (vendors, customers and the event organizer!), my auction items brought in a lot of money and I was able to sell a few pillows during our down time. And the best part, lots of money got donated to Mustang Animal shelter.

D.U.C.K Week Junk Show
This show was okay. I broke even on costs/sales. This was a family friendly event so there was a lot of moms... moms who were a little too nosy. More than one woman approached me to tell me that it's good that I'm "having fun" and "living my dreams out" while I'm young and before I settled down to have a family. I held my tongue and just smiled while I was screaming on the inside.... Okay lady, #1. This isn't a phase; RagsReborn is a viable business and career option for me and #2. I can't "settle down and have a family"... infertility.
Anyway, the best part of this show was my custom orders. One of my customers at Quarter Mania came to this show and brought me four of her late mother-in-law's shirts. Four pillows later, she was the happiest woman at the entire event. I really made an impact on her and her family and it made me feel so warm & fuzzy on the inside. And, her daughter was the cutest thing ever! Oh and she must have contacted one of her friends because not long after I finished with her order, I had another nice lady come to me with a shirt to pillow-ify.

Cleveland County Fairgrounds/Creative Craft Festival
This was the show that my display shelf broke at ... it must have been a sign because I did terrible on sales. (;_;) It was my first goose egg show. There were lots of lookers and interest (people talked to me; picked up the items and told me how much they liked this pillow or that pillow) but no one purchased. I guess it the compliments and reception was good. I just wish I could have convinced those lookers to buy.
In my defense, this was the same weekend as the huge Devon layoffs.

Wilmont Place Baptist Church
This was my second show in a row with zero sales. And this was even worse... no traffic & no compliments. I was put in a bad location.  A handful of vendors were put in the cafeteria with no sign directing shoppers our way. I made good friends with vendors next to me; both ladies (one sold Tupperware and the other crocheted) were craft show veterans so I got a lot of advice and our chit chat helped pass the time.

Western Oaks Christian Church
FINALLY!! A good show in terms of sales & traffic! I stayed busy all day. There was free wi-fi & breakfast for the vendors. The church volunteers & staff were so helpful and friendly. The event organizer was one of the best. I met new vendors (new as in this was their first show) so I got to be the veteran who bestowed knowledge and advice. It was a great day! I will definitely participate again.

The Handmade Show at the Crown Center
I absolutely LOVE this show. I know the event organizer; I know the church staff & volunteers; I know the other vendors. Participating in this show is like spending a day with friends. Unfortunately, there was a shortage of vendors and slow traffic but the church was supportive, as usual. The Crown Center really advertises this show to its community. I think everyone who attends church there comes out to support the show. But, it was a lot slower than their Holiday Handmade Show. I did okay on sales. I didn't break even but still donated all money made (not just profits) to The Endometriosis Foundation. I can't wait to return to the Holiday Handmade Show-- November 5th, 2016. Mark your calendars now!

The Festival of the Broncos Craft Show
I had A LOT of issues with this show... where to begin...
       1. There was ZERO, ZILCH, NADA advertising. There were only a few vendors (probably 25 booths) and even less shoppers. The show was from 10am-3pm and less than 75 people came in. If I had to guess, I would say the traffic flow was probably 50-65 people. Due to the low volume, I made no sales. Both of the ladies I was next to (Pink Zebra and a direct sale jewelry consultant) complained about the lack of advertising, so it wasn't just me being whiny. Another vendor told me that her friend attends church at the church that the show was at and even she didn't know about the show. The event organizers did not promote. The church did not promote. Mustang High School did not promote.
       2. This show was a fundraiser for Mustang High School's Project Graduation... strangely enough, no one from Mustang High School came out to the show. Every show that I have ever participated in has volunteers; volunteers to answer general questions, to help unload your car, to booth-sit for you if you need a potty break... this show had NONE. Where were all the graduating seniors? If we are spending our Saturday fundraising for you (the graduating class of 2016), why would you not come out and show your support???? This absolutely blew my mind. I guess students of Mustang High School are just extremely ungrateful.
       3. There were no concessions. We were there all day and there was no food & drinks. Luckily for me, my mom and Mike came out and brought me lunch. In general, if a craft show has food, more people come out to shop. They come for lunch and stay to shop. Duh! I guess the event coordinators haven't heard of this concept. The Pink Zebra consultant next to me drove all the way to this show from Enid. She didn't bring food or water because she expected there to be concessions. Her husband couldn't come to Mustang from Enid to bring her food. Poor lady had horrible sales AND starved to death all day!
       4. The only thing the event coordinators cared about was collecting their tax forms. I have a feeling that they've gotten in trouble with the Oklahoma Tax Commission before so they are very diligent about tax forms now. When I arrived in the morning, the only thing that was explained to me was the tax form. No one told me where my booth was or if I could purchase breakfast. Just, "Don't forget to fill out your tax form and pay your taxes collected at the end of the day." As I was setting up my booth, the event coordinator reminded me again that I needed to collect taxes and pay her at day's end. Toward the end of the show, her husband reminded me again that I needed to collect taxes and pay him at day's end. Then after the show was over, her husband walked around to personally collect our tax form and money. I had enough! I gave him my form and when he noticed that there was no money attached, I told him that I didn't sell a single thing because no one came to the show. Did he care? Nope. He just took my form and walked on to the next booth.

Garden Festival in the Park
I wanted to do this show because 1. I grew up going to Will Rogers Park and have lots of fond childhood memories there so this was my way to "give back" & 2. In my mind, I thought I would do really well because I'd be one of the few craft booths there so I'd stand out and have little competition. Unfortunately, I set my expectations a little too high.
The event organizer needed craft booths to be in the Exhibition Hall with the educational booths but everything had to be garden/outdoor/floral themed. I had to sew completely new inventory for this show (34 pillows). I worked SO hard for this show and I didn't even break even in sales. (;_;) It was pretty devastating but that wasn't the Garden Festival's fault. The festival itself went very well. The event organizer was very helpful and professional, all of the booths were strategically placed and there was high traffic all day long. I would estimate that over 1,000 people came to the festival.
Although my sales were dismal, I enjoyed the show (if I hadn't been a vendor, this was an event I would go to as a spectator). I got to browse many locally grown plants, flowers & herbs, I bought some homemade dog treats from Butterbites and I got to catch up with a vendor friend of mine.

Trinity Free Will Baptist Craft Show-
A good show to end the spring season!! Yippie \(^_^)/ This was Trinity Free Will Baptist Church's second annual craft show. There were only 7 vendors and less than 50 shoppers but I see a lot of potential in this show. I will definitely be returning next spring. There were 4 handmade booths and then Scentsy, Paparazzi & Jamberry. (Always a good show when there are more handmade crafts than direct sales!) The church staff was very friendly. Jessie (a church member) helped me unload my car in record time. I asked him if he could carry in my trunk of pillows and he ended up carrying in everything!! The pastor was present at the show all day and various members of the church community stopped by to show their support. At the end of the day, the show organizer was open to suggestions.
Although there wasn't a huge turnout in customers, I sold more pillows here than I did at Cleveland County Fairgrounds, Wilmont Place Baptist Church, and The Festival of the Broncos craft shows. And, best of all, I got two custom orders!! One was from a lady who wanted pillows from six button-down dress-shirts that belonged to her husband and the other order was from the Scentsy consultant for two small pillows.
Swirls Gifts & Treats with Jennifer, RagsReborn Gifts and The Last Supper.

As I mentioned before, Spring craft shows are ROUGH. And it's not just me, that was the consensus that I gathered from other vendors, too. I only averaged well under 10 sales per show. I am taking a much needed rest and won't be doing any more shows until October or November. But...before I go on a break, I am doing one last Quarter Mania! It'll be Friday June 3, 2016 from 5:30pm - 8:30pm. All proceeds from the auction are going to be donated to the Mustang Senior Center. Quarter Mania is a fun fun event... I hope to see you there!!

The Summer Show is this Saturday (8/15)!!

My next show is this weekend...exactly five days from today!!
       Saturday August 15, 2015 from 9:00am - 4:00pm
It is in Yukon, OK, which isn't that far of a drive from the OKC Metro. (Trust me, if it was "that far of a drive," I would not be doing it... I hate driving!)
Come on out and see me...say hello, give me a hug, bring me a t-shirt and I'll sew it into a pillow right then & there. Getting things now and "on the spot" is awesome. Let me share some of that awesome with you. : )
If you haven't bought a pillow or tote from me before, I'm almost certain you'll find one that you like.  I have been shopping around for shirts and sewing like crazy. The new inventory that I have made for this show is not on my Etsy shop, yet. It's for in-person buyers first. I have taken note of what sold at previous shows and what has been selling on my Etsy shop currently. I have tweaked my buying behavior and my new stuff caters much more to you... YOU, dear shopper, will be seeing more of what your previous buying behavior indicates that you like. What doesn't sell at The Summer Show will be put on my Etsy store later, but for now, you get first dibs.
If you have bought a pillow (or tote) from me before, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! If you just love that pillow immensely and it's gotten a little used and flat, bring it out. I'll re-stuff and fluff it back to life for you for just $1.

About a month before this show, I won tickets to a vendor/small business/crafter workshop. It was hosted by Indie Trunk Show and each winner got to bring a friend. I brought fellow crafter and coworker, Glass Soldier Gifts. She has helped me so much, this was the least I could do as a thank you.
My winning notices.
The title of the workshop was "Visual Merchandising: The Basics". It was a pretty good class & I learned quite a bit. I don't have the means to apply my knowledge to RagsReborn at the moment but when finances improve, I definitely have a to-do list. After the workshop, we had one-on-one time with our instructor and she was really nice and helpful. And, of course, I loved meeting all the other local crafters (our presenter was a crafter herself). We learned so much about booth display, product placement and merchandising/marketing in general. So much so that we came home with an entire packet of information to use as reference for later. The top three things I learned were:
1. I need to create a visual brand identity. Right now, I have a brand name but its stylized a zillion ways. I have...
     RagsReborn Gifts
         rags|reborn
                      Rags Reborn Gifts
I must settle on one (I'm thinking the first one but I need to make sure it isn't already in use). Luckily, I have one definite logo: r|r. Check that off the brand identity list!
     Along with my name, I need to settle on one font--which I think I already am doing-- & only use a few colors --which I need to sit down and think about before choosing. Consistency builds brand recognition. Everything will flow... {blue business cards, blue logos, blue flyers. Come to the show and look for the blue.}
As of now, I have no tax ID number. I am only doing casual sales so it's not necessary. I will be getting a tax ID in January 2016 (I want to take this more seriously), and at that time, I will be picking a company name style, font and 2-3 colors. Then throughout the new year (and forever more), my business cards, flyers, show announcements, etc. will all match. I don't know why I haven't thought about this before. It makes total sense.
This not only applies to my marketing material, it also applies to my booth display. Right now, my booth looks like a garage sale. It's unorganized & unprofessional; it only consists of a few pieces of furniture (one I made myself). I need to focus on getting a theme with consistent colors and shapes. The instructor advised to avoid the same display materials as what you sell. So, I will be getting rid of my cloth clad double-decker couch. I'm not sure how much longer that thing will last so it's just as well.
And, one last thing, I need to dress to match my booth and brand recognition. Once again, I have never thought of this. At the two shows that I have done to date, I just "dressed cute." Companies have uniforms for a reason. Everything matches, everything looks put together, everything will scream, "Rags Reborn is here, come here, come shop!"
2. I NEED a booth with walls. As mentioned above, my booth is hardly a booth. It's the best I could muster up as a beginner. I am hard on myself a lot but I did just start RagsReborn in November 2014. It's still a baby and I can't expect for it to be completely put together, yet. I have a vision of what I want my booth at shows to look like. Now, I just need to turn this vision into reality. I also need money...lots of money.
The most upsetting thing to me about my Indie Trunk Show experience was how juvenile my booth looked. Everyone around me had much better & more professionally built booths. They had walls! No matter how awesome your product is, no one will stop by and look if your booth is shitty. It's like dating... personality is great but everyone wants to bang and they ain't bangin' an ugly chick. Well, my booth was the ugly chick of the Indie Trunk Show. My products are good & I am nice to customers; in my mind, my sales sucked because of my booth display.
Our workshop leader spent a lot of time on wall merchandising and directing the flow of traffic. She advised for your walls to be useful: put some shelves on your walls, hang a sign from your wall. She taught us the concept of triangle merchandising and using our space wisely. She also said that displaying items in an odd number promotes more sales. I didn't understand the "why" to that concept but I will definitely try it and see if it works.
I was relieved when she said that only one back wall is needed. She actually said that being boxed up with side walls hinders traffic flow. In the end, I want my booth to look like a lodge or cabin. I sell pillows and pillows are cozy. I want some shelving on my back wall, I want a few benches to display my pillows on and I want a mounted wall-hanging thing for my totes. (I have no idea what those are called... you hang your hats or keys or whatever on them.) I want these items to be made of wood so they look rustic but cozy once my pillows are placed upon them. And I want an area rug. When a customer walks into my booth, I want them to be walking into the cozy bedroom from their childhood vacation. Look, there's your favorite superhero t-shirt turned into a pillow laying on that chair!
I have big dreams and big dreams cost money and SUVs. Seeing as I currently drive a Sentra, my imagined wood structures would never be able to be transported. Reality is a bitch. But I will start small and eventually build up to my dream booth (and eventually buy an SUV).
We got goodies at this workshop. Some samples of our instructor's work (see picture before this one), some discounts and a handwritten thank you note.
3. Offer free stuff. I have always known this works--I'm a major sucker for free and discounts-- and I have been wanting to do it at my shows. Most shows have "swag bags." It's where all of the vendors get to put a sample of their craft in a large bag in hopes of luring customers to their booth and the first 100 shoppers into the show get one of these large bags filled with goodies. For me, two problems arise immediately: 1. I do not have 100 uniformly sewn items & 2. a lot of the time, shows require vendors to pay a fee to participate in the swag bags. I will do this at a future show. I already know what I want my swag bag sample item to be. Once again, this stuff takes time and money...two things I desperately lack as a beginner.
Other ideas our workshop presented were:
*At-show discounts- ex. Buy today at my show and get 20% off!
*Coupons tied to your promotional items- ex. Staple a coupon to your flyer when you hand them out (I really want to do this because it encourages people to take your flyer and then it makes them want to find you at whatever huge show you are a part of.)
*Coupons to use later that are passed out at the show- ex. Don't want to buy now? Take this coupon and get 15% off at my Etsy shop later.
One last thing that I really want to do is to let people know where I will be next. My neighbor at the Indie Trunk Show (who will forever be known as "the onesie lady") told me that she passes out flyers for her next show at the show that she's currently doing. By doing this, she has built up a massive fan base. People drive out from everywhere to attend her shows. She lures them out with promises of more onesie designs, sizes and discounts.
"Come to my next show for this and that...here, take a flyer so you don't forget when & where my next show is."
This idea is brilliant. It takes the pressure off customers having to buy today but if they really want an item, they will come to your next show for it. It is a personalized invitation out to your next show. It shows you're established and actually are do shows on a regular basis.

That is all I have. I really benefited from this workshop and I hope what I learned will help you in your future shows. I hope to see you out this weekend!
